Korea's Illegal Dog Meat Trade
WHAT YOU CAN DO
Boshintang, Korea's "dog-meat stew," is an outdated dish that was once believed to
bolster a man's flagging sexual energy. The more violently the dog was beaten, the more
"curative" the dog meat. Of course, dog meat as a cure for erectile dysfunction is strictly a
myth. More importantly, DOG MEAT IS ILLEGAL IN KOREA.
In 1984, escalating international outcry against the vicious slaughter and consumption of
man's best friend forced Korea to ban the consumption of dogs or face a worldwide boycott
of the upcoming 1988 summer Olympic Games in Seoul. But following the Olympics, a core
of dog-meat dealers determined to regain their profiteering trade marketed the myth that dog-
meat stew is a "thousand-year-old tradition." Dog-meat stew is not now, nor has it ever been,
a Korean tradition, and
NOTHING COULD BE FARTHER FROM THE TRUTH
1) Korea's Ministry of Health banned dog-meat stew in 1984 after defining it a "disgusting
food" and not intended for human consumption.
2) Korea's Ministry of Agriculture defines dog meat as contraband and does not include
dog in its list of "Livestock Animals for Meat Production."
3) Korea's 1991National Animal Protection Law makes it illegal to harm or abuse dogs,
cats, and all animals.

Together we can end the misery of Korean animals.
Please urge the president of Korea to 1.) Introduce stronger measures and repercussions
to end the slaughter and consumption of dogs and cats; and 2.) Enforce existing laws that
prohibit the cruelty to and consumption of dogs and cats
