Hawaii Proposes Ban on Dog and Cat Meat

Hawaii Proposes Ban on Consumption & Slaughter of Dogs & Cats
 
Animal Rights Hawaii (ARH) has informed us that Hawaii’s legislature has introduced a bill banning the killing of dogs and cats for food. The original bill was only going to apply to stray dogs and cats, but it was recently changed for the better. This will set an important precedent for the protection of companion animals in the Pacific rim region and the world. The bill’s name is HB866 and was heard recently by the House Judiciary Committee. The Committee passed it adding stronger language - to ban the slaughter, sale and consumption of all dogs and cats. A companion Senate Bill 564 has not been scheduled for a hearing yet.
 
Therefore ARH is asking our members to do the following:

Please contact Sen. Coleen Hanabusa, Chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee and request that she schedule a hearing for SB 564, a companion bill to the house bill to ban the slaughter and consumption of dogs and cats. There is tremendous community support for this bill; the house judiciary committee even extended protection to all dogs and cats. Please take a moment and send polite requests to: senhanabusa@capitol.hawaii.gov.

Dear Senator Hanabusa
 
As you are aware bill HB866 was not only passed by the House Judiciary Committee, but strengthened to extend protection to all cats and dogs, not only strays.
 
The human consumption of these animals is practised in several Asian countries, in most cases with the belief that the suffering of the animal creates either medicinal or aphrodisiac qualities in the meat. The abominable cruelty inflicted on these creatures as a result defies credibility.
 
Hawaii is a modern State and must be seen by the rest of the world as rejecting such barbarous practices. I urge you therefore to schedule a hearing for bill SB 564 as soon as possible.
